The electrochemical behavior of a series of the metal complexes [Fe(III), Ni(II), Ru(III),Pd(II) and Hf(IV)]derived from the Schiff base ligand(E)-5-((phenyl(-pyridin-2-yl) methylene) amino) pyrimidine-2,4(1H, 3H)-dione(H2L) which was previously prepared from condensation of 5-aminouracil and 2-benzoylpyridine was studied by using cyclic voltammetric technique. The Schiff base ligand H2L and its metal complexes exhibited quasi- reversible oxidation- reduction with three electron transfer and it was suggested that their reactions on the platinum surface electrode are not purely diffusion controlled but also under adsorption control. The redox reactive sites of the H2L and its complexes were located via the geometry optimization and frequency calculations using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/LanL2DZ level of theory. In addition, the Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes exhibit fluorescent properties. The antimicrobial activity of the Schiff base ligand H2L and its metal complexes was tested against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus(,Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and fungal strain (Aspergillus niger) by using agar well-diffusion method. Herein we report, a mononuclear, highly fluorescent zinc(ii) complex Zn(L)(N-3)(H2O) (1) that was prepared by an easy one pot method, in which the tridentate Schiff base ligand (E)-4-((2-(dimethylamino)ethylimino)methyl)-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylpyridin-3-ol (HL) was generated in situ. The compound is characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, and its structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. DFT calculations were used to understand the electronic structures of the ligand and the complex, and TD-DFT calculations were performed to interpret the nature of the electronic transitions observed in their UV-vis spectra. In the complex, Zn(II) is found to be penta-coordinated with one azide ligand, an aqua ligand and a monoanionic tridentate N,N,O-donor ligand. In an aqueous methanol (1:9 by volume) solution, at the physiological pH (0.01 M Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.4), compound 1 exhibits an intense greenish blue fluorescence (lambda(ex) 390 nm, lambda(em) 462 nm), whose intensity is about 17-fold stronger than that of the free ligand. Compound 1 is found to show significant DNA binding activity. The pyridoxal appended tridentate ligand can be used for the bio-imaging of Zn(II).

Green and sustainable chemistry approaches necessitate an ongoing investigation towards new, environmentally benign and selective catalysts. We have thus prepared a new benzothiazole-scaffolded hydrazone Schiff base ligand L and coordinated it with copper(II) ions leading to five different complexes, the form of which in the solid state is counterion-dependent. Nitrate, chloride and trifiate anions lead to monometallic species, whereas utilization of sulfates and tetrafluoroborates is responsible for the formation of bimetallic assemblies. The catalytic efficiency of synthesized compounds was shown in Cu-TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-l-piperidinoxyl) aerobic oxidation of activated alcohols resulting in good to excellent conversions and 100% selectivity to form the corresponding aldehydes. Considering the experimental results and Density Functional Theory calculations we propose two most plausible reaction mechanisms that further corroborate the enhanced activity of bimetallic species. It appears that the tridentate character of the ligand sacrifices some of the overall catalytic efficiency for the selectivity of the process. Aqueous reaction medium, low catalyst loading, air as oxidant and exclusive oxidative selectivity render these Cu ll complexes promising candidates for further improvement. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Water-soluble vitamins like B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), and B9 (folic acid) are of utmost importance in human health and disease, as they are involved in numerous critical metabolic reactions. Not surprisingly, deficiencies of these vitamins have been linked to various disease states. Unfortunately, not much is known about the physiological levels of B6 vitamers and vitamin B3 in an ethnically isolated group (such as an Emirati population), as well as their relationship with obesity. The aim of the present study was to quantify various B6 vitamers, as well as B3, in the plasma of obese and healthy Emirati populations and to examine their correlation with obesity. A sensitive and robust HPLC-MS/MS-based method was developed for the simultaneous quantitation of five physiologically relevant forms of vitamin B6, namely pyridoxal, pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, pyridoxamine phosphate, and pyridoxal phosphate, as well as nicotinamide, in human plasma. This method was used to quantify the concentrations of these vitamers in the plasma of 57 healthy and 57 obese Emirati volunteers. Our analysis showed that the plasma concentrations of nicotinamide, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine phosphate in the obese Emirati population were significantly higher than those in healthy volunteers (p< 0.0001,p= 0.0006, andp= 0.002, respectively). No significant differences were observed for the plasma concentrations of pyridoxine and pyridoxal phosphate. Furthermore, the concentrations of some of these vitamers in healthy Emirati volunteers were significantly different than those published in the literature for Western populations, such as American and European volunteers. This initial study underscores the need to quantify micronutrients in distinct ethnic groups, as well as people suffering from chronic metabolic disorders. We report a mild palladium-catalyzed selective dehydrogenation of 4-alkylpyridines that exploits their soft enolization to alkylidene dihydropyridines using allyl chloroformate under metal-free conditions. Treatment of these intermediates with a palladium catalyst liberates an alkylpyridylic anion and an allylpalladium(II) intermediate, which combine and undergo beta-hydride elimination to install a double bond. Importantly, the formation of gas byproducts makes the process very practical. Furthermore, the reaction tolerates a broad range of functional groups, including many that can be dehydrogenated using similar palladium-catalyzed reactions, and is selective for 4-alkylpyridines even in substrates bearing multiple pyridylic positions.

Cobalt complexes containing a salen-type pyridoxal ligand with pyridine were synthesized as a new Co (III) catalytic system for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide. Two cobalt(III) complexes possessing a salen-type pyridoxyl ligand were synthesized by the reaction of pyridoxal ligands (pyr(2)en = (N,N’-bis (pyridoxylideneiminato)ethylene) and pyr(2)cy = (N,N’-bis(pyridoxylideneiminato)cyclohexane)) and Co (OAc)(2) and characterized by various analytical methods, including infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution mass analysis. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography analysis confirmed that the cobalt pyr(2)en complex had a distorted octahedral structure: the tetradentate Schiff base ligand binds the cobalt metal in one plane, and the metal center adopts an octahedral geometry by the additional coordination of acetate and dimethyl sulfoxide. The synthesized complexes were used as catalysts in the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) to propylene oxide. The catalysts showed high activity for cycloaddition between CO2 and epoxides, even at a low loading (0.5 mol%), in the presence of various cocatalysts. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Silver nanoparticles are generated from simple silver (I) salts and operate at 25 degrees C under 20 bar of hydrogen pressure. Various aliphatic and aromatic ketones, including natural products were reduced into the corresponding alcohols in high yields. This silver catalyst allows for the selective hydrogenation of ketones in the presence of other functional groups.

Three new mononuclear complexes of the type [M(L)(2)](ClO4)(2), with Ni(II) (1), Cu(II) (2) and Zn(II) (3) ions, have been synthesized and structurally characterized, using the N,N,O donor Schiff base ligand 2-[(phenyl-pyridine-2-yl-methylene)-amino]-ethanol]. An X-ray diffraction study reveals identical crystallization patterns for each of the complexes, in the monoclinic crystal system with the C2/c space group. Interestingly, the synthesized complexes are isostructural in nature. The complexes showed biomimetic phenoxazinone synthase-like activity for the aerial oxidation of o-aminophenol to phenoxazine-2-one, separately in methanol (MeOH) and acetonitrile (ACN) solutions. For each of the complexes, the turnover numbers were found to be higher in MeOH than in ACN. The highest catalytic activity between among the three complexes was found to be for complex 2. A simple, and practical oxidative scission of aromatic olefins to carbonyl compounds using O-2 as the sole oxidant with poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether as a benign solvent has been developed. A wide range of monosubstituted, gem-disubstituted, 1,2-disubstituted, trisubstituted and tetrasubstituted aromatic olefins was successfully converted into the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in excellent yields even with gram-scale reaction. Some control experiments were also conducted to support a possible reaction pathway.

A three-descriptor quantitative structure-activity/toxicity relationship (QSAR/QSTR) model was developed for the skin permeability of a sufficiently large data set consisting of 274 compounds, by applying support vector machine (SVM) together with genetic algorithm. The optimal SVM model possesses the coefficient of determination R-2 of 0.946 and root mean square (rms) error of 0.253 for the training set of 139 compounds; and a R-2 of 0.872 and rms of 0.302 for the test set of 135 compounds. Compared with other models reported in the literature, our SVM model shows better statistical performance in a model that deals with more samples in the test set. Therefore, applying a SVM algorithm to develop a nonlinear QSAR model for skin permeability was achieved.
