Two mononuclear Fe(II) complexes having same ligand framework, coordination geometry but different counter anions [Fe(L)]X-2 [L = N-(phenyl-pyridin-2-yl-methylene)-ethane-1,2-diamine; X = ClO4- (1), PF6- (2)] have been synthesized and crystallographically characterized. Both the complexes catalyzed catechol-quinone oxidation pH dependently. In the pH range 8.3-8.5 the suitable activity of both the complexes were found. Counter anions in the complexes played a significant role in controlling the turn over numbers of the catalytic reactions. In acetonitrile (MeCN), the turn over number for 1 was 4.99 h(-1) and for 2, it was 42.75 h(-1).

A new fluorometric chemodosimeter 2-amino-3-(((E)-3-(1-phenylimidazo[1,5-]pyridin-3-yl)benzylidene)amino)maleonitrile (BPI-MAL) has been designed and synthesized for sensing hypochlorite. BPI-MAL showed a selective turn-on fluorescence for ClO- through hypochlorite-promoted de-diaminomaleonitrile reaction. It also could detect ClO- in the presence of various competitive anions including reactive oxygen species. Interestingly, sensor BPI-MAL was successfully applied as a fluorescent test kit for ClO- determination. The sensing property and mechanism of BPI-MAL toward ClO- were studied by fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR titration and DFT calculations.

Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) was discovered as a highly efficient and green catalyst for aerobic oxidation of the -methylene carbon of primary amines as well as benzylic groups into the corresponding amides and ketones under neat conditions. We described herein, ionic liquid TBAOH catalysed aerobic oxidation of benzyl amines to benzamides and with elemental sulfur; the corresponding benzylbenzothioamides were obtained under metal-free, oxidant-free and base-free conditions. Applicability at the gram scale for the synthesis of the desired amides/ketones is also demonstrated with the present protocol.

A new imidazo [1,5-alpha]pyridine-based fluorescent probe, named MZC-AC, is developed for the detection of cysteine (Cys) based on an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The probe MZC-AC uses an acrylate moiety as the ESIPT blocking group as well as the recognition site. Upon the treatment with Cys, MZC-AC exhibits a dramatic fluorescence enhancement (85-fold) and a large Stokes shift (166 nm). The limit of detection obtained from fluorescent titration was as low as 0.07 mu M. MZC-AC displays highly sensitive and selective response to Cys over homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH). Significantly, MZC-AC could be used to detect Cys in living cells.

Purpose: We investigated Nw-hydroxy L-Arginine (NOHA) predictive response in serous ovarian carcinoma based on estrogen-hormone receptor expression status; and assessed the distinctive NOHA response between estrogen-receptor-negative (ER-) tumor subtypes of ovarian and breast cancer. Materials/methods: Three-dimensional (3D) spheroids models of ER- and estrogen-receptor-positive (ER+) from breast and ovarian tumor, cultured for 9 weeks, were assayed for cellular levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS2), nitric oxide (as total nitrite) and L-Arginine, and compared to NOHA in culture medium. Statistical difference was set at p < 0.01. Results: Nine-week in vitro studies showed a progressive NOHA reduction in culture medium by at least 0.4-0.8 fold, and 0.65-0.92 fold only in the ER-breast tumor and ER-ovarian tumor 3D spheroids, respectively; with increases in cellular NOS2 and nitric-oxide levels, by at least 1.0-2.45 fold in both ER-tumor subtype 3D spheroids (p < 0.01; n = 6). Within ER-subtypes, medium NOHA decreased by >= 38.9% in ovarian cancer over breast cancer 3D-spheroids, with cellular increases in NOS2 (by >= 17.4%), and nitric oxide (by >= 18.8%). Cellular L-Arginine to medium NOHA ratio was higher, and by at least 6.5-22.5 fold in ER-breast tumor 3D-spheroids, and at least 10-70 fold in ER-ovarian tumor 3D spheroids, than in ER+ and control conditions; and was >= 48% higher in ER-ovarian cancer than in ER-breast cancer 3D-spheroids. Conclusions: The present study shows NOHA as a sensitive and selective indicator differentiating and distinguishing ER-subtypes based on the tumor grade.

Chiral heterocyclic secondary alcohols have received much attention due to their widespread use in pharmaceutical intermediates. In this study, Lactobacillus kefiri P2 biocatalysts isolated from traditional dairy products, were used to catalyze the asymmetric reduction of prochiral ketones to chiral secondary alcohols. Secondary chiral carbinols were obtained by asymmetric bioreduction of different prochiral substrates with results up to>99% enantiomeric excess (ee). (R)-1-(benzofuran-2-yl)ethanol 5a, which can be used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals such as bufuralols potent nonselective beta-blockers antagonists, Amiodarone (cardiac anti-arrhythmic), and Benziodarone (coronary vasodilator), was produced in gram-scale, high yield and enantiomerically pure form using L. kefiri P2 biocatalysts. The gram-scale production was carried out, and 9.70 g of (R)-5a in enantiomerically pure form was obtained in 96% yield. Also, production of (R)-5a in terms of yield and gram scale through catalytic asymmetric reduction using the biocatalyst was the highest report so far. This is a cost-effective, clean and eco-friendly process for the preparation of chiral secondary alcohols compared to chemical processes. From an environmental and economic perspective, this biocatalytic method has great application potential, making it a green and sustainable way of synthesis.

Nanoporous AlSBA-15 catalysts with different nSi/nAl ratios (41, 129, and 210) were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. These catalysts were characterized by XRD, N-2 sorption, TPD-NH3, FT-IR, SEM and TEM. XRD analyses of AlSBA-15 catalysts confirmed the presence of well-ordered crystalline structure with p6mm symmetry. The specific surface area and specific pore volume of the AlSBA-15 catalysts are in the range of 480 to 757 m(2)/g and 0.65 to 0.95 cm(3)/g, respectively. The catalytic performance of nanoporous AlSBA-15 catalysts are used as an outstanding catalytic system for one-pot synthesis of alpha-aminophosphonates via Kabachnik-Fields reaction in a three-component system using amines (primary/secondary), carbonyl compounds (aldehydes/ketones) and diethyl phosphite. The major advantages of the present contributions are excellent yields, short reaction time, simple experimental technique, high chemo-selectivity, catalyst recyclability, easy work-up procedure and green approach. Three-component synthesis of alpha-aminophosphonates follows first imine formation from amine and aldehyde/ketone followed by phosphate addition. The experimental findings suggest that the nanoporous AlSBA-15 catalysts can be recycled and reused up to six cycles without any loss in the catalytic performance.

High-valent iron-oxo complexes are key intermediates in C-H functionalization reactions. A metal-free and radical-free synthesis of heteroaromatic aldehydes was developed through aerobic oxidation of methyl groups in an I2/DMSO/O2 catalytic system. Under the reaction conditions, various functional groups such as methoxy, aldehyde, ester, nitro, amide, and halo (F, Cl, Br) groups were well tolerated. The bioactive compounds like chlorchinaldin derivative and papaverine were also oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones. This reaction provided an efficient method for preparing the valuable heteroaromatic aldehydes.
