The pH of the aqueous layer was adjusted to 2 using 2 N hydrochloric acid and the precipitate was filtered to give the title compound as a brown solid (0.740 g, 79%). m.p. 256-263 C.; 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) delta 6.53 (d, J=9.4 Hz, 1H), 7.40-7.49 (m, 5H), 7.87 (dd, J=2.5, 9.8 Hz, 1H), 8.23 (d, J=2.5 Hz, 1H); IR (KBr) nu 3446, 1708, 1645, 1577, 1263, 1228 cm-1; MS 214 (M-1).
