Rajkiewicz, Adam A.;Wojciechowska, Natalia;Kalek, Marcin research published 《 N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Synthesis of Ynones via C-H Alkynylation of Aldehydes with Alkynyliodonium Salts – Evidence for Alkynyl Transfer via Direct Substitution at Acetylenic Carbon》, the research content is summarized as follows. Alkynylation of aldehydes with alkynyl(aryl)iodonium salts catalyzed by an N-heterocyclic carbene has been developed. The application of the organocatalyst and the hypervalent iodine group-transfer reagent allowed for metal-free C-H functionalization and C-C bond formation. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, at -40° and in the presence of an amine base, providing access to an array of heteroaryl-propargyl ketones containing various substituents in good to excellent yields. The mechanism of the reaction was investigated by means of both experiments and d. functional theory calculations 13C-labeling and computations determined that the key alkynyl transfer step occurs via an unusual direct substitution at an acetylenic carbon, wherein an iodine-based leaving group is exchanged by a Breslow intermediate nucleophile. Moreover, kinetic studies revealed that the turnover-limiting step of the catalytic cycle is the generation of the Breslow intermediate, whereas the subsequent C-C bond-formation is a fast process. These results are fully reproduced and rationalized by the calculated full free energy profile of the reaction, showing that the largest energy span is located between the protonated form of NHC catalyst and the transition state for the carbene attack on the aldehyde substrate.

Ramaiah, Manjunatha M.;Shivananju, Nanjunda Swamy;Shubha, Priya Babu research published 《 A Facile, Efficient and Solvent-Free Titanium (IV) Ethoxide Catalysed Knoevenagel Condensation of Aldehydes and Active Methylenes》, the research content is summarized as follows. A convenient method was illustrated for the preparation of α,β-unsaturated compounds using both conventional and microwave irradiation methods. An efficient and solvent free Knoevenagel condensation between aldehydes and active methylenes was developed using titanium ethoxide. The procedure proved to be successful with a wide range of substrates such as aromatic, aliphatic and heterocyclic aldehydes and various active methylenes to afford substituted olefins. The reaction was also carried out under microwave irradiation to accomplish the corresponding olefins with improved reaction rates, yields and cleaner reaction profiles. An efficient and novel methodol. was developed for the synthesis of olefinic compounds by Knoevenagel condensation under solvent-free conditions using titanium ethoxide, for the first time, as a reagent as well as a solvent. The significant advantages offered by this methodol. could be applied to various active methylenes in order to offer the corresponding Knoevenagel products. Thus, we believed that this method delivers high conversions, cleaner reaction profiles under solvent-free reaction conditions and shorter reaction times, all of which make it a very useful and attractive approach for the preparation of a wide range of substituted olefins.

Rohner, Stefan S.;Kinzel, Niklas W.;Werle, Christophe;Leitner, Walter research published 《 Systematic ligand variation to modulate the electrochemical properties of iron and manganese complexes》, the research content is summarized as follows. A series of iron(III) and manganese(II) complexes based on the dpaqR-ligand system (dpaq = 2-[bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)]amino-N-quinolin-8-yl-acetamide) were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) to elucidate how the electronic properties of the ligands influence the overpotential and catalytic current in the context of water oxidation catalysis. For the Fe-complexes an electron withdrawing NO2 or CF3 group attached to the 5-position of the quinoline unit increased the catalytic current, but only with a simultaneous increase of the overpotential. However, when a pyrene moiety was attached to the dipicolylamine unit of the ligand, the overpotential decreased with concomitant increase of the catalytic current. Although the manganese complexes showed no reversible formation of a mol. catalytically active species for water oxidation, the variations of the ligand scaffold affected largely the same trends in their electrochem. behavior.

Pai, Sandesh;Schott, Marco;Niklaus, Lukas;Posset, Uwe;Kurth, Dirk G. research published 《 A study of the effect of pyridine linkers on the viscosity and electrochromic properties of metallo-supramolecular coordination polymers》, the research content is summarized as follows. The authors present the optical, electrochem., and electrochromic properties of Fe(II)-, Co(II)- and Ru(II)-based metallo-supramol. polymers (MEPEs) self-assembled from rigid, π-conjugated bis-terpyridines with different numbers of pyridine linkers. By exciting the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition, Ru-MEPEs show a weak luminescence in the NIR region (λlum = 765 nm) at room temperature The viscosity of Co-MEPEs in water, ethanol and 75% acetic acid is significantly higher in comparison to the analogous Fe-MEPEs. The SEM cross-section images of the highly transparent dip-coated films show smooth and homogenous surfaces with film thicknesses of <200 nm for Fe-, Co- and Ru-MEPEs. The cyclic voltammograms of the Fe- and Ru-MEPEs show a reversible redox couple corresponding to the Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Ru(II)/Ru(III) states, resp. Co-MEPEs display two metal centered Co(II)/Co(I) and Co(II)/Co(III) reversible redox waves at -1.12 and -0.10 V vs. Fc/Fc+, resp. Fe-MEPE films show a promising high cycle stability over 1000 switching cycles. The coloration efficiencies were also determined for Fe-MEPEs (720 mC cm-2 at 594 nm). The study of the electrochromic properties reveals that the introduction of pyridine linkers enhances the switching stability and reversibility. Co-MEPEs exhibit a broad absorption band covering the visible and NIR region at a neg. potential (-1.4 V vs. Fc/Fc+) due to the metal-to-ligand charge transfer from Co(I) to the acceptor terpyridine ligands.

Plajer, Alex J.;Percastegui, Edmundo G.;Santella, Marco;Rizzuto, Felix J.;Gan, Quan;Laursen, Bo W.;Nitschke, Jonathan R. research published 《 Fluorometric Recognition of Nucleotides within a Water-Soluble Tetrahedral Capsule》, the research content is summarized as follows. The design of aqueous probes and binders for complex, biol. relevant anions presents a key challenge in supramol. chem. Herein, a tetrahedral assembly with cationic faces and corners is reported that is capable of discriminating between anionic and neutral guests in water. Electrostatic repulsion between subcomponents can be overcome by the addition of an anionic template, or generating a robust covalent framework by incorporating tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN). The resultant TREN-capped, water-soluble, fluorescent cage binds mono- and poly-phosphoric esters, including nucleotides. Its covalent skeleton renders it stable at micromolar concentrations in water, enabling the fluorometric detection of biol. relevant guests in an aqueous environment. Selective supramol. encapsulants, such as 1, could enable new sensing applications, such as recognition of toxins and drugs, under biol. conditions.

McConnell, Anna J.;Haynes, Cally J. Two differently protected aldehydes, A and B, were demonstrated to deprotect selectively through the application of light and heat, resp. In the presence of iron(II) and a triamine, two distinct FeII4L4 cages, 1 and 2, were thus observed to form from the deprotected A and B, resp. The alkyl tails of B and 2 render them preferentially soluble in cyclopentane, whereas A and 1 remain in acetonitrile. The stimulus applied (either light or heat) thus determines the outcome of self-assembly and dictates whether the cage and its ferrocene cargo remain in acetonitrile, or transport into cyclopentane. Cage self-assembly and cargo transport between phases can in this fashion be programmed using orthogonal stimuli.

Employing a Rh(I)-catalyst, a mild and scalable aldehyde C-H activation, that permits the coupling with unactivated terminal alkynes was achieved in good yields and with high regioselectivities (up to >20 : 1 l:b). Both substrates can tolerate a broad variety of functional groups. The reaction can also be applied to diazine aldehydes that contain a free N-lone pair. Conversion of the hydroacylation products to the corresponding azine, through a one-pot hydroacylation/deoxygenation sequence was also demonstrated. A one-pot hydroacylation/cyclization, using N-Boc propargylamine, addnl. leads to the synthesis of a bidentate pyrrolyl ligand.
