General procedure: Aromatic or aliphatic nitriles (2 mmol) were dissolved in 5 ml of [bmim]HSO4 and the reaction mixture was heated at 60-65 C for 1-3 h. The product was precipitated out, filtered and dried. The yield of the final product was high (>90%) in all cases. After proper drying under reduced pressure, approximately 95% ionic liquid was recovered from the reaction and compared with the original ionic liquid to check its authenticity. The efficiency of recovered ionic liquid in conversion of nitriles to acids was found unchanged in comparison to the original one and we reused it up to 5-6 cycles without any significant loss of its activity.

Synthesis of poly(styrene)-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) four-arm star block copolymers via ATRP and their self-assembly behaviors

In this study, synthesis of poly (styrene)-b-poly (2-vinyl pyridine) four-arm star block copolymers ((PS-b-P2VP)(4) sBCPs) possessing high interaction parameter (chi) feature was investigated. To obtain well-defined sBCPs, a challenge on ATRP of pyridine-containing monomers is foreseeable. We thus scrutinized the domino effect from PS macminitiators (MIs) having different halogen chain ends (i.e., (PS-X)(4), where X = Br/Cl) to the subsequent chain extensions. As evident from the model reactions of benzyl halides (BzX, where X = Br/Cl) and 2-methylpyridine (2 MP), the combination of BzCl and 2 MP can significantly suppress the substitution side reaction. Consequently, well-defined (PS-b-P2VP)(4) sBCPs were obtained (M-n = ca. 58 k-82 k with PDI <1.5). From the analyses of small angle X-Ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM), self-assembly behaviors of the obtaining sBCPs were facilely observed due to the high chi feature, mainly including cylinder and lamellae morphologies, in nanoscale of approximately 30 nm. The UV-vis absorption, photoluminescence, and electrochemistry properties of all complexes have been studied. These complexes emit orange-red photoluminescence with quantum yields of 28-46 % and excited state lifetimes of 0.48-0.65 mu s in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature. Based on the DFT calculations, we concluded that their emission originated predominantly from a hybrid (MLCT)-M-3/(ILCT)-I-3 excited state.

Transition metal nitroprussides form a family of coordination polymers with interesting physical properties. From their three-dimensional (3D) phases, by inducing rupture of the axial T-NC bond through organic molecules (L) with a high ability to form a T-L coordination bond, pillared transition metal nitroprussides can be obtained. For monodentate molecules, for example, pyridine and its derivatives, the pillars are formed in the interlayer region by pairs of molecules coupled through their dipole moments, and the resulting solid has a two-dimensional (2D) structure with T(L)(2)[Fe(CN)(5)NO] as the formula unit. In this contribution, we report the use of a bidentate molecule, pyrazine, to obtain pillared ferrous nitroprusside. According to the refined crystal structure, this solid has a 3D framework, which results from the pyrazine molecule (L) coordinating to two iron atoms to afford Fe(pyrazine)[Fe(CN)(5)NO]. This material shows spin-crossover (SCO) behavior with thermal hysteresis of about 40 K, which is associated with relatively large structural changes, for instance, a reversible variation of 12% in the unit cell volume. The thermally induced spin transition is accompanied by a notable color change of the material. The main features of this thermally activated spin transition in the material under study are discussed herein on the basis of its structural characterization at 100 and 300 K, magnetic and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, and Raman and Mossbauer spectra for both the low- and high-spin phases. The reversibility of this thermally activated spin transition has been verified by magnetic, Mossbauer, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and infrared (IR) data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the preparation and characterization of Fe(pyrazine)[Fe(CN)(5)NO] and its thermally induced SCO behavior.

Effect of Content of Cerium Ion on Bronsted-Acid-Catalyzed Reaction of Thiophene over CeY Zeolite Studied by In Situ FTIR Spectroscopy

With NaY zeolite as the raw material, CeY zeolites with different content of Ce ions were prepared by liquid phase ion exchange (LPIE) method. Their chemical compositions were measured by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) and FTIR spectra of pyridine (Py-FTIR) techniques were used to characterize acidity of CeY zeolites. With thiophene (TP, C4H4S) as probe molecule, adsorption and reaction of TP over CeY zeolites were researched by using in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Finally, it can be found that activity of Bronsted(B)-acid-catalyzed reaction of TP firstly increases and then has little change with the increase of concentration of Ce(NO3)(3) solution (c), while increases with the increase of the exchange times by a combination of adsorption and reaction of TP over CeY zeolite with acidity of CeY zeolite and with location of Ce ion in CeY zeolite. Especially, the sulfur-metal (S-M) interaction between TP and Ce ion located in the supercage exhibits more influence than B-acid-catalyzed reaction of TP on adsorption desulfurization of CeY zeolite.

Large coloration efficiency and fast response NiO electrochromic thin film electrode based on NiO nanocrystals

Nickel oxide (NiO) nanocrystals were fabricated by one-pot synthesis under the atmosphere of O-2. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) test show that the average diameter was ca. 3 nm. Measurement of EC properties of NiO nanocrystals was performed by testing NiO thin film electrode based on NiO nanocrystals in LiClO4/PC electrolyte with applied voltages of +/- 1.5 V, 50 s respectively. The results show that nanocrystals based NiO electrode have good EC performances. Optical modulation rate (Delta T) was 41.5% at the wavelength of 550 nm. Coloration switching time was 1.77 s and coloration efficiency (CE) was 114.7 cm(2).C-1.

A series of novel gelators (GB(1), GB(2) and GB(3)) based on pyridine derivatives with various numbers of benzene unit from 1 to 3 were designed and synthesized. They exhibited obvious aggregation-induced emission properties. The self-assembly processes of GB(1), GB(2) and GB(3) in DMSO or mixed solvent of DMSO/H2O (4/1, v/v) were investigated. Hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking interaction were the main driving force for gel formation. Very interestingly, the gelation ability, self-assembly mode, rheological behavior and surface wettability of these self-assembly systems could be tuned by the number of benzene unit. With the increasing number of benzene unit, the solubility of the molecule was obviously enhanced in organic solvent, and then the formation of gel needs higher ratio of H2O in mixed solvents. J-type aggregation mode was employed in gels GB(1) and GB(2). Microbelts and micron blocks structure were formed in their self-assembly gels. Gel GB(1) in DMSO showed the strongest mechanical strength comparing with other gels GB(2) and GB(3) in mixed solvents due to the firmest hydrogen bonding interaction. The hydrophobic surface with the contact angles from 138 degrees to144.5 degrees were obtained in self-assembly system.
