Sulfonated surface patches of poly(styrene)-based colloidal particles (CPs) were functionalized with cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]). The macrocycles served as recognition units for di-Ph viologen (DPV2+), a rigid bridging ligand. The addition of DPV2+ to aqueous suspensions of the particles triggered the self-assembly of short linear and branched chainlike structures. The self-assembly mechanism is based on hydrophobic/ion-charge interactions that are established between DPV2+ and surface-adsorbed CB[7]. DPV2+ guides the self-assembly of the CPs by forming a ternary DPV2+⊂(CB[7])2 complex in which the two CB[7] macrocycles are attached to two different particles. Viologen-driven particle assembly was found to be both directional and reversible. Whereas sodium chloride triggers irreversible particle disassembly, the one-electron reduction of DPV2+ with sodium dithionite causes disassembly that can be reversed via air oxidation Thus, this bottom-up synthetic supramol. approach allowed for the reversible formation and directional alignment of a 2D colloidal material.

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of PV2+2Cl·2H2O and PVâ€?PF6·pyridine reveals the expected differences in bond lengths and also a structural change from two coplanar central rings in PVâ€? to a twist of 36° between the two central rings in PV2+. The Ph viologen radical cation exhibits behavior characteristic of many radical cations, including weak π-dimerization in the solid state and reversible π-dimerization in solution Elec. conductivity measurements of neutral Ph viologen, the first such measurements of a neutral viologen, reveal that it is a significantly better conductor than the radical cation. Differences in geometric relaxation during charge transfer offer a possible explanation for the higher conductivity of the neutral viologen.

The effects of the title drug (I), an agent inducing exptl. parkinsonism, and 8 of its pyridine and dipyridyl analogs on brain content of monoamines, behavior, and synaptosomal reuptake of dopamine were studied in mice. Two daily doses of the agents at 80-90% of their LD50 did not affect (except I) the brain levels of noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin within 5-7 days and the behavior within 3 mo. The present communication deals with the designing of a new p-n junction device made with 4,4′-aryl bipyridine, also known as aryl viologen (ArV), a p-type organic semiconductor and 3-diazophenyl, 4,5 dihydroxynaphthalene, 2,7 disulfonic acid, disodium salt, commonly known as chromotrope 2R (CHR), a n-type organic semiconductor. The elec. and photoelec. properties of the fabricated p-n junction having configuration ITO/ArV/CHR/In was studied by analyzing its current-voltage (J-V) characteristics, capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics in the dark and photoaction spectra. The anal. of dark current-voltage (J-V) characteristics at room temperature was presented to elucidate the conduction mechanisms and to evaluate the device parameters. The charge transport conduction mechanism in forward biased condition in the low voltage region is described by the modified Shockley effect. For biases >1.0 V, the dark current is a space charge limited current (SCLC) in the presence of exponentially distributed traps. The variation of 1/C2 with voltage also shows the straight line at low frequency indicating the formation of p-n junction between ArV and CHR and the potential barrier height is âˆ?.18 eV at room temperature which decreases with the increase in temperature The comparison of photoaction spectra with absorption spectra of the ArV-CHR layer reveals that photocurrent in this device is due to the generation of excitons both in ArV and CHR. The excitons generated in ArV dissociated by electron transfer to CHR and those created in CHR are ionized by hole transfer to the ArV. This charge transfer may be driven by the offset between the electron affinities and ionization potentials of two semiconductors.
