When the reaction was completed for 2-3 h according to TLC analysis,the mixture was filtered, and the filtrate was diluted by CH2Cl2 (60 ml). The mixture was washed by 0.1 N HCl (30 ml), saturated Na2CO3 (30 ml) and saturated NaCl (30 ml),dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, concentrated in vacuo, and purified by PTLC to give the pure 4alpha-acyloxypodophyllotoxin derivatives 5a, b, e, f in 84-90% yields. Shell isolated nanoparticle enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) studies of steel surface corrosion

Electrochemical shell isolated nanoparticle enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) in alkaline environments using Au@SnO2 core-shell particles is reported. Au nanoparticles covered by an approximately 4 nm thick SnO2 shell are shown to be pinhole free and provide strong surface enhanced Raman scattering of a pyridine derivative adsorbed on smooth gold surfaces. The Au@SnO2 core-shell particles are used to demonstrate the first electrochemical SHINERS spectra of corrosion products on 304 stainless steel and carbon steel. Unlike Au@SiO2 particles, the SnO2 shells are not degraded by the local high pH created by electrolysis reactions. The SHINERS spectra for 304 stainless steel are indicative of amorphous or microcrystalline Fe(OH)(2) with a small contribution from Cr(VI) oxide at high overpotentials. In the presence of KCl, a band attributed to gamma-FeOOH is found in the spectra. For carbon steel the SHINERS spectra did not show any evidence of Fe oxides, hydroxides or oxyhydroxides but rather the formation of the Fe-water complex, [Fe(H2O)(6)](n+) (n = 2,3) at the electrode surface. SHINERS data for carbon steel in the presence of an organic inhibitor, benzotriazole (BTA), indicate that BTA inhibits the formation of Fe-water complexes at the surface of the electrode that form in its absence.

Synthesis and characterization of homoleptic triply cyclometalated iridium (III) complex containing 6-(pyridin-2-yl)isoquinoline moiety for solution-processable orange-phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

The design and synthesis of a novel homoleptic triply cyclometalated iridium(III) complex containing the 6-(pyridin-2-yl)isoquinoline moiety [Ir(pyiq)(3)] was demonstrated for the first time. The performance of a phosphorescent organic light emitting diode (PHOLED) based on Ir(pyiq)(3) is described with adoption of tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine (TCTA) and 2,2′,2 ”-(1,3,5-benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (TPBi) which are co-host materials showing excellent compatibilities as well as CBP host with the prepared phosphorescent dopants. The photoluminescence (PL) of Ir(pyiq)(3) produced orange emission with maximum emission peak at 583 nm. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy (LUMO) levels of Ir(pyiq)(3) were 5.41 eV and 3.20 eV. An optimized solution-processed device doped with Ir(pyiq)(3) had a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 8.71% and a maximum current efficiency (CE) of 22.51 cd/A. This correspond to 17% higher efficiency than that with bis(2-phenylbenzothiozolato-N,C-2′) iridium(acetylacetonate) (bt)(2)Ir(acac), which is commonly used in orange PHOLEDs. This study rationalizes the promising application of new trimeric organometallic complex that possesses isoquinoline and pyridine in solution-processed PHOLEDs with good quantum and power efficiency.

Controlled one pot synthesis of polyoxofluorovanadate molecular hybrids exhibiting peroxidase like activity

Three unique mixed-valence polyoxofluorovanadate clusters have been synthesized through a facile preparation process. The structure of these clusters is controlled by the addition of organic ligands. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of 1 revealed that the spins of the VIV centers are coupled to each other, in contrast to the isolated spins of the isostructural [(V12V2O16)-V-V-O-IV(mu-O)(10)(mu(3)-O)(10)(mu(3)-F)(2)(L)(2)](6-), where L: im = imidazole (4); py (5). Synthesis and catalytic performance of SnxSTA by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis for fructose to HMF

Microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of SnxSTA material was prepared with different treatment times (1 and 2 h), and efficient conversion of fructose to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was obtained. The synthesized catalysts were studied by N-2 sorption, X-ray powder diffraction, FT-IR, FE-SEM, pyridine-FTIR, TGA-DTA, and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (TPD-NH3). Microwave-assisted hydrothermal-synthesized SnxSTA-MW-2 exhibited excellent catalytic fructose dehydration with 98% of HMF yield at 120 degrees C for 2 h. The surface acidity was found to be crucial for optimum catalytic activity.

Pyridylic anions are soft nucleophiles in the palladium-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H allylation of 4-alkylpyridines

We report a mild palladium-catalyzed method for the selective allylation of 4-alkylpyridines in which highly basic pyridylic anions behave as soft nucleophiles. This method exploits alkylidene dihydropyridines, which are semi-stable intermediates readily formed using a ‘soft-enolization’ approach, in a new mechanistic manifold for decarboxylative allylation. Notably, the catalytic generation of pyridylic anions results in a substantially broader functional group tolerance compared to other pyridine allylation methods. Experimental and theoretical mechanistic studies strongly suggest that pyridylic anions are indeed the active nucleophiles in these reactions, and that they participate in an outer-sphere reductive elimination step. This finding establishes a new pK(a) boundary of 35 for soft nucleophiles in transition metal-catalyzed allylations.

Polypyridine ligands as potential metallo-beta-lactamase inhibitors

Bacteria have developed multiple resistance mechanisms against the most used antibiotics. In particular, zinc-dependent metallo-beta-lactamase producing bacteria are a growing threat, and therapeutic options are limited. Zinc chelators have recently been investigated as metallo-beta-lactamase inhibitors, as they are often able to restore carbapenem susceptibility. We synthesized polypyridyl ligands, N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine, N, N,N’-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine, N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine-N-acetic acid (N,N,N’-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine-N’-acetic acid, which can form zinc(II) complexes. We tested their ability to restore the antibiotic activity of meropenem against three clinical strains isolated from blood and metallo-beta-lactamase producers (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia). We functionalized N,N,N’-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine with D-alanyl-D-alanyl-D-alanine methyl ester with the aim to increase bacterial uptake. We observed synergistic activity of four polypyridyl ligands with meropenem against all tested isolates, while the combination N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine and meropenem was synergistic only against New Delhi and Verona integron-encoded metallo-beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. All synergistic interactions restored the antimicrobial activity of meropenem, providing a significant decrease of minimal inhibitory concentration value (by 8- to 128-fold). We also studied toxicity of the ligands in two normal peripheral blood lymphocytes.

Design, synthesis, and photophysical properties of Re(I) tricarbonyl 1,10-phenanthroline complexes
