Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence based on carbonitrile-substituted pyridine and carbazole

Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are promising for future applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this study, two carbonitrile-substituted pyridine and carbazole based light-emitting molecules with a compact architecture were designed and synthesized. Although they have the same donor units, their emission color can be tuned by varying the electron withdrawing capacity of the acceptor. Thanks to the large torsion angle between the benzene core and each donor/acceptor, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) and the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of these compounds are separately distributed on the carbonitrile-substituted pyridine and carbazole units, respectively. Their small energy gap between the singlet and triplet states, as well as typical TADF feature were characterized. In addition, an OLED device based on these CN-substituted pyridine compounds gave external quantum efficiencies of up to 21.1% and 27.6% for blue and green light, respectively.

Synthesis, characterization and dielectric properties of porous hydrogen-bonded organic framework of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid with 4-methoxyaniline and its Bi(III) complex

Reaction between H(2)PDA, MA and bismuth(III)nitrate penta-hydrate in 2:1:1 ratio results in the formation of a proton transfer complex, (HMA)(2)[Bi-2(PDA)(4 center dot)2H(2)O](center dot)4H(2)O. Chemical-informatics approach to COVID-19 drug discovery: Exploration of important fragments and data mining based prediction of some hits from natural origins as main protease (Mpro) inhibitors

As the world struggles against current global pandemic of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), it is challenging to trigger drug discovery efforts to search broad-spectrum antiviral agents. Thus, there is a need of strong and sustainable global collaborative works especially in terms of new and existing data analysis and sharing which will join the dots of knowledge gap. Our present chemical-informatics based data analysis approach is an attempt of application of previous activity data of SARS-CoV main protease (Mpro) inhibitors to accelerate the search of present SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors. The study design was composed of three major aspects: (1) classification QSAR based data mining of diverse SARS-CoV Mpro inhibitors, (2) identification of favourable and/or unfavourable molecular features/fingerprints/substructures regulating the Mpro inhibitory properties, (3) data mining based prediction to validate recently reported virtual hits from natural origin against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro enzyme. Our Structural and physico-chemical interpretation (SPCI) analysis suggested that heterocyclic nucleus like diazole, furan and pyridine have clear positive contribution while, thiophen, thiazole and pyrimidine may exhibit negative contribution to the SARS-CoV Mpro inhibition. Several Monte Carlo optimization based QSAR models were developed and the best model was used for screening of some natural product hits from recent publications. The resulted active molecules were analysed further from the aspects of fragment analysis. This approach set a stage for fragment exploration and QSAR based screening of active molecules against putative SARSCoV-2 Mpro enzyme. We believe the future in vitro and in vivo studies would provide more perspectives for anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents. (c) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mapping Biochemical Pathways in Maytenus ilicifolia (Celastraceae) through Integrated Proteomics and Histochemistry

Maytenus ilicifolia (Celastraceae) is a medicinal plant that is native to southern Brazil and is popularly known as espinheira-santa. From a biosynthesis perspective, this species accumulates quinonemethide triterpenes and sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloids as major secondary metabolites that exhibit interesting biological properties, with antitumoral and antiprotozoal activities, respectively, being the most frequently reported. Additionally, the restricted accumulation of such compounds in the roots raises questions about the expression of proteins involved in such compartmentalization and their possible biological and/or ecological role in M. ilicifolia. Thus, this article describes the use of shotgun proteomics and histochemical studies for the characterization of the main biosynthetic pathways involved in the regulation of the metabolism in M. ilicifolia roots. This combined approaches also resulted in the identification of a series of proteins involved in the quinonemethide triterpenes and sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloids, providing evidences of their differential compartmentalization.

Syntheses and photocatalytic properties of three new d(10)-based coordination polymers: effects of metal centres and ancillary ligands

Three new coordination polymers (CPs) with formula [Cd(L)(bb)] (1), [Cd(L)(bbi)(0.5)(H2O)] (2) and [Zn-2(L)(2)(bip)(2)] (3) (H2L = 3,3 ‘-[{1,3-phenylenebis-(methyleneoxy)}dibenzoic acid]; bb = 4,4 ‘-bis(imidazolyl)biphenyl; bbi = 1 ‘-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) and bip = 3,5-bis(1-imidazolyl)pyridine) have been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that 1 displays a 2D structure with (3,5)-connected net topology, 2 has a 2D double chain-like framework, while 3 exhibits only 1D chains. An anionic organic dye, methyl violet (MV), was selected as a model pollutant in aqueous media to evaluate the photocatalytic properties of the three CPs. The photocatalytic experiments revealed that these CPs exhibited good photocatalytic activities for MV degradation under UV light and also showed good photocatalytic stability. The difference in catalytic activity among the CPs arises due to the change in the central metal ions as well as the nature of the ancillary ligands, which in turn changed the nature of the framework and hence the electronic properties of these CPs. The possible mechanisms for the photocatalytic activity displayed by these CPs for the photodegradation of MV have been addressed using the density of states (DOS) and partial DOS (pDOS) calculations.

Novel amide and imidazole compounds as potent hematopoietic prostaglandin D-2 synthase inhibitors

In seeking novel and potent small molecule hematopoietic prostaglandin D-2 synthase (H-PGDS) inhibitors as potential therapies for PGD(2)-mediated diseases and conditions, we explored a series comprising multiple aryl/heteroaryl rings attached in a linear arrangement. Each compound incorporates an amide or imidazole linker between the pyrimidine or pyridine core ring and the tail ring system. We synthesized and screened twenty analogs by fluorescence polarization binding assay, thermal shift assay, glutathione S-transferase inhibition assay, and a cell-based assay measuring suppression of LPS-induced PGD(2) stimulation. Amide analogs show ten-fold greater shift in the thermal shift assay in the presence of glutathione (GSH) versus the same assay run in the absence of GSH. The imidazole analogs did not produce a significant change in thermal shift between the two assay conditions, suggesting a possible stabilization effect of the amide linker in the synthase-GSH-inhibitor complex. Imidazole analog 23, (KMN-010034) demonstrates superior potency across the in vitro assays and good in vitro metabolic stability in both human and guinea pig liver microsomes.

Compatibilized polypropylene nanocomposites containing expanded graphite and graphene nanoplatelets

We present a non-covalent compatibilization approach to prepare polypropylene (PP) composites containing expanded graphite (EG) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) by melt compounding. This method involves PP matrix functionalization with pyridine (Py) moieties, which are capable of engaging in pi-pi interactions with the surface of the EG and GNPs. The addition of 10 wt% of PP grafted with amino-pyridine (PP-g-Py) to neat PP facilitated the break-up of EG particles, by intercalating between their layers and facilitating their separation into smaller tactoids. GNPs were prepared starting from EG through a thermomechanical exfoliation method. Addition of GNPs to PP resulted in well-dispersed platelets having aspect ratios as high as 40, whereas in the presence of the PP-g-Py compatibilizer the matrix contained sub-micron scale platelets. The electrical percolation thresholds were in the vicinity of 6 and 10 vol% in the compatibilized PP-EG and PP-GNP composites, respectively, and the maximum value of the electrical conductivity achieved was 10(-1) S/m for the compatibilized GNP composites. Addition of GNPs resulted in increases in the flexural moduli by as much as 95% compared to the unfilled PP, whereas the impact strength remained unaffected up to 10 wt% GNP content.
