The method has wide functional group tolerance and enables the formation of bis-heterocycle linkages including 2,4′-bipyridines, 2,3′-bipyridines, and 2,2′-bipyridines, as well as pyridines linked to pyrimidines, pyrazines, isoxazoles, and benzothiophenes II (R4 = 2-fluoropyridin-4-yl, pyrazin-2-yl, dimethyl-1,2-oxazol-4-yl, 1-benzothiophen-2-yl, etc.). The methodol. was successfully applied to the synthesis of the natural products caerulomycin A and E.
