The chlorination of 2-aminopyridine at various H2SO4 concentrations and the distribution of chlorinated products was studied in detail. With increasing acidity dichlorination decreases, and in 72% H2SO4 only traces of dichlorination occur. The selectivity of the chlorination reaction is ascribed to differences in the rate of chlorination of protonated vs nonprotonated substrates.
