A reaction mixture prepared by adding 4.85 g of N-bromosuccinimide slowly to the suspension was stirred for 2 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. Water was added to the reaction mixture, which was then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, then dried, and concentrated in vacuo to give 5.39 g of a crude product of 6-bromo-2-cyano-3-hydroxypyridine
