To a solution of 6-chloro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine (1 .37 g, 8.97 mmol) in DMF (100 ml_), sodium hydride (60 % in paraffin, 1 g, 41 mmol) was added. The solution was stirred for 30 min being allowed to warm up from 0 C to rt. Subsequently, benzenesulfonic acid chloride (1 .5 mL, 1 1.8 mmol) was added dropwise. The suspension was stirred 3 h at room temperature and hydrolyzed with ice water. The resulting solid was filtered off under reduced pressure, washed thoroughly with water (75 mL) and finally with petroleum ether (15 mL). The resulting material was dried at 60 C and purified by column chromatography (eluent: pure dichloromethane) yielding 856 mg of 1 -(benzenesulfonyl)-6-chloro- pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine Xll-4a as a brownish solid.
