Reduction of the ethyl ester to the primary alcohol was carried out with sodium borohydride in ethanol; subsequent methyl ether formation with iodomethane and silver(l) oxide afforded fe/f-butyl 5-(1 , 1 -difluoro-2- methoxyethyl)pyridine-2-carboxylate. Treatment with trifluoroacetic acid then generated the requisite 5-(1 , 1 -difluoro-2-methoxyethyl)pyridine-2-carboxylic acid.
