alpha-Deuterated alcohols have important applications in pharmaceuticals and mechanism studies. Here, we report a new and practical strategy for the reductive deuteration of ketones using a Mg/BrCH2CH2Br/D2O system, which affords alpha-deuterated alcohols in good yields and with almost quantitative incorporation of deuterium. The synthetic value of this method has been demonstrated by the easy access to deuterated drugs or drug derivatives. This method may inspire the discovery of other deuterium-containing drugs.

Blue emitting phosphorescent materials with high efficiency and high stability are a key requirement for the wider adoption of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs). In order to achieve triplet derived emission at the higher energy region of the electromagnetic spectrum, a series of neutral, monocyclometalated gold(iii) complexes with trifluoromethyl and trifluoromethoxy functionalized 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) derivatives, 2-anilinopyridine (apy), 2-benzoylpyridine (bpy) and 2-benzylpyridine (bepy), as the cyclometalating framework and diaryl or monoaryl alkyne as ancillary ligands have been designed and synthesized. Extensive photophysical and chemical characterization by various nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy techniques, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of selected compounds was carried out to confirm the structural and the chemical identity of the complexes. The emission wavelength maxima of the complexes appear in the blue/sky blue region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Detailed photophysical investigations revealed that the different emission properties of the complexes are predominantly dictated by the electronic properties of the cyclometalating ligand. The interesting photoluminescence properties along with the facile synthetic access makes this a promising concept to obtain highly suitable blue emitting gold(iii) complexes.

A new imidazo [1,5-alpha]pyridine-based fluorescent probe, named MZC-AC, is developed for the detection of cysteine (Cys) based on an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The probe MZC-AC uses an acrylate moiety as the ESIPT blocking group as well as the recognition site. Upon the treatment with Cys, MZC-AC exhibits a dramatic fluorescence enhancement (85-fold) and a large Stokes shift (166 nm). The limit of detection obtained from fluorescent titration was as low as 0.07 mu M. MZC-AC displays highly sensitive and selective response to Cys over homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH). Significantly, MZC-AC could be used to detect Cys in living cells.

Copper or silver-catalyzed direct C(sp(2))-H/N-H electrochemical cross-coupling of phthalimide and heterocyclic arenes (2-phenylpyridine, benzo[h]quinoline, benzoxazole, and benzothiazole, etc.) for the efficient synthesis of phthalimide derivatives is described. This reaction features good yield, mild conditions, and broad substrate scope, which provides an efficient and straightforward protocol to access this type of tertiary amines. For the first time, the proposed protocol is based not only on a copper catalyst but also on silver, which has never been used for this purpose before, and both give comparable results. POM-supported metal carbonyl derivatives (PMCDs) represent a family of tremendous potential catalysts owing to their peculiar physical and chemical properties. Yet low-valence transition metal-substituted Dawson-type PMCD catalysts are uncommon. Hence, we synthesized a tricobalt-substituted PMCDs by conventional aqueous solution method, [Na(H2O)(5)](NH4)(7)[P2W15O56Co3(H2O)(3)(OH)(3)Re(CO)(3)]center dot 13H(2)O (1), and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography, IR, and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), etc. The obtained compound 1 was employed as a catalyst for the oxidation of diphenylmethane (DPM) to benzophenone, giving 96.8% yield in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and pyridine. The control experiments indicate that Co metal ion plays an important role in the catalytic reactions. As a side note, the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and UV spectroscopy showed that 1 can retain its integrity in solution, and magnetic measurements indicated that 1 exhibited a weaker ferromagnetic interaction at low temperature.

A metal-free and radical-free synthesis of heteroaromatic aldehydes was developed through aerobic oxidation of methyl groups in an I2/DMSO/O2 catalytic system. Under the reaction conditions, various functional groups such as methoxy, aldehyde, ester, nitro, amide, and halo (F, Cl, Br) groups were well tolerated. The bioactive compounds like chlorchinaldin derivative and papaverine were also oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones. The enantiopure Schiff bases (RorS)-1-(p-R-1-C6H4)-N-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)ethanamine (R-1= H and OCH3) are synthesized from reaction between the 2-benzoyl-pyridine andchiral-amine (RorS)-1-(p-R-1-C6H4)ethylamine, respectively. These Schiff bases react with the copper(II) acetate to give distorted-tetrahedralbis[(RorS)-1-(p-R-1-C6H4)-N-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)ethanamino-kappa N-2,N]-Delta/?-Cu(PF6)(2)in the presence of NH4PF6. A conformational change fromcis- totrans-isomer occurs in solution and thereby, the copper(II) coordinates to the solelytrans-form to provide the complexes. Cyclic voltammograms demonstrate two quasi-reversible one electron charge transfer processes for the Cu2+/Cu(+)and Cu+/Cu(0)couples in acetonitrile. ECD spectra reveal expected mirror-image relationships and indicate enantiopurity or enantiomeric excess of theRorS-ligands and their associated complexes in solution. Comparisons of experimental and simulated ECD spectra suggest induced chirality at-metal center, which diastereoselectively provides the Delta-Cu-Ror ?-Cu-Sdiastereomer as major product in solution. DFT/TDDFT optimized structures and excited state properties correspond well to the experimental results.

Herein, we realized the simultaneous online detection of six tobacco alkaloids (TM) by in-tube solid-phase microextraction (In-tube SPME) coupled with mass spectrometry by a rapid, sensitive, and matrix effect-free method requiring no chromatographic separation and only minimal sample pre-treatment. A poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-divinylbenzene-co-N, N’-methylenediacrylamide) [Poly (NIPAAm-co-DVB-co-MBAA)] monolithic column was designed according to the chemical structures of selected TM and used as an extraction medium engaging in hydrophobic, pi-pi, and hydrogen bonding interactions with analytes, allowing them to be effectively extracted. A number of important parameters were systematically optimized to achieve maximal extraction efficiency. The ion intensity of the TM signals obtained by in-tube SPME-MS were higher than the direct MS mode by about 400 folds with the signal-to-noise ratio improved by 2-7 folds. The detection limits of the six TM were determined as 1.99-4.06 ng g(-1), with good linearity with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.99 obtained under optimal extraction conditions. Besides, TA recoveries in cigarette tobacco spiked at three concentration levels were in the range of 76.4-100.2%, and the corresponding RSDs (n = 5) were obtained as 4.32-7.16%. The extraction performance of the poly (NIPAAm-co-DVB-co-MBAA) monolithic column was well reproducible, with intra- or inter-day precision RSDs determined not to exceed 7.38%. Finally, no marked matrix effects were observed when the developed method was applied to the analysis of both high-abundance and trace level TM in practical samples, and the above technique was therefore concluded to be well suited for the detection of TAs in cigarette tobacco or other products.

Two diastereoisomers of bis(2-benzoylpyridine-O,N)dichloridonickel(II) have been isolated from the reactions of nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate and the organic ligand depending on the reaction solvent (ethanol, acetonitrile) used. DFT studies indicate that one of the isomers is more stable in both solvents, but nevertheless different diastereoisomers are crystallized from the two solvents. The two complexes represent the first pair of well characterized diastereoisomers in the coordination chemistry of 2-pyridyl ketones, providing a new example in the chemistry of octahedral MA(2)(BC) over cap (2) complexes (A = a monodentate ligand, (BC) over cap = an unsymmetrical bidentate chelate).
